How should I search: by address or by business name?

Either way. Search understands both addresses (“Chekhova 1”) and places (“Pyaterochka”) and ranks results differently: for places, closeness to the current map point matters; for addresses, the precision of the match.

The difference is fundamental. When you look for a chain store, you almost always need the nearest one — so among places the one closer to the point the map is looking at wins. When you look for “Chekhova Street, 1”, you need exactly house number one on Chekhova Street, wherever it is — and closeness only gets in the way.

So the ranking rule considers several signs in order: a match with the essence of the found object, how completely the whole query matches, the house number, an explicitly given street type. Refinement works: “Chekhova Street” and “Chekhova Lane” are no longer confused, and “Pyaterochka on Chekhova” looks for the store on that street, not just any nearby one.

A practical tip: if you need a specific building, give the number; if you need a place nearby, first move the map to the right area — search takes it into account.
