Yandex or Google map in Mock Location: satellite and hybrid

The map in Mock Location is drawn by one of two engines: Yandex (the default) or Google. The choice is free and concerns only the picture — location, place search and route building always work through Yandex. The Google map also adds satellite imagery and hybrid: imagery of the area with street and building labels. These are part of Premium.

  1. Open “Settings → Map”

The gear in the bottom-right corner of the map opens the settings menu; “Map” is the first of its five sections. Changes apply immediately.

  2. Choose the map engine

“Map engine”: “Yandex” or “Google”. Below the switch there is a reminder: “Location and place search always use Yandex; only the map itself changes.” The marker, zoom and selected point are kept when you switch engines, and the route line and the trip are drawn the same on both maps.

  3. Turn on satellite or hybrid

With the “Google” engine, the “Map layer” block has “Map”, “Satellite” and “Hybrid”. “Satellite” is imagery of the area, “Hybrid” is imagery with street and building labels. Both layers are part of Premium: without a subscription the block shows “Satellite and hybrid are Premium features” and a “Get Premium” button, and the map stays a regular map.

  4. Check the label language

Map labels follow the app language. The Google map changes the language right away. The Yandex map needs a short app restart for that — about a second; the app does it by itself and opens the same screen. If spoofing is on at that moment, the labels switch language after you turn it off.

Why satellite is only on Google

The Yandex map in the app is Yandex MapKit. For third-party apps it provides only “scheme” maps, so the “Yandex” engine has a single layer. Satellite imagery and hybrid are shown by the Google map. Both engines have a night map: with a dark appearance the map is dark too.

If Google is not offered

Google Maps needs Google Play services on the phone. On devices without them — for example, modern Huawei phones — Google cannot be selected, and the app works with the Yandex map; spoofing, search and routes do not depend on it. If Google services disappear after you chose Google, the app switches back to Yandex by itself.

Without Premium, and your data

The engine choice is free and is kept. If Premium ends, the layer goes back to “Map”, and the engine stays the one you chose. With the Google engine, map tiles are loaded from Google's servers: they see the phone's IP address and the map area you are viewing — that is how any Google map works. A Google account is not needed for this and is not used. The same is described in the website's privacy policy.
