Movement options: traffic lights, traffic, speed limits and tunnels

A point that moves in a straight line at a constant speed gives itself away within seconds: a real person brakes before a turn, waits at a red light and loses the signal in a tunnel. In Mock Location's “Movement simulation”, the “Options” block takes care of that. It shows only what fits the chosen travel mode, and the defaults are already chosen for a believable trip. Below is what each switch does and which modes it is available for.

For all travel modes

“Natural movement” (on by default) — the speed varies slightly, and the point slows down on turns and climbs; on a long walk or bike ride it gets a little tired towards the end.

“Stop at traffic lights” (on) — sometimes the light is red and the point waits, sometimes it is green and it goes on. The car, motorcycle and scooter stop at the traffic lights from the Yandex route. On foot and by bike — at road crossings, which is where city traffic lights are.

“Wait at points” — a stop at each intermediate point. The duration is chosen right there: 1, 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes; a second tap sets a range, and each stop gets a random length within it.

“City GPS accuracy” — now and then accuracy drops to 5–15 m and some updates are lost, as among tall buildings.

“Straight line” — no roads, directly between the points. Handy when the road network does not fit: a field, water, a closed area. “Transit” and “Hybrid” do not have this option.

On foot, by bicycle and e-bike

“Avoid stairs” (on foot and by transit) and “Avoid steep climbs” change the route itself: it will go around stairs and steep slopes.

“Dismount at crosswalks” (bicycle and e-bike, on) — a cyclist crosses a zebra crossing at walking pace, as traffic rules require.

“Short breaks” — now and then stop for 20–60 seconds, as a real person does.

Climbs and descents slow down and speed up the movement (the e-bike slows down less), and the altitude above sea level in the coordinates comes from the terrain. Routes have no strict “zebra crossings only” mode: a walking route already goes along sidewalks and crossings, and the number of crossings is shown in the editor.

Car, motorcycle and scooter

“Keep to speed limits” (on) — on sections with a limit, the point goes no faster than the sign.

“Account for traffic” — the speed of a section follows the current Yandex traffic on the roads, and in a jam the movement becomes stop-and-go. Traffic is refreshed if the route was built more than five minutes ago; during a trip that is already running it does not change.

“Avoid toll roads” (on), “Avoid unpaved roads” and “Avoid highways” change the route itself.

“Lose signal in tunnels” — inside a tunnel the location does not update, as with real GPS.

The point slows down for speed bumps and railway crossings by itself, there is no separate switch for them. The scooter here is a moped that rides on the roadway, not on highways.

Public transport

The “Transit” mode builds a route by buses, trams and other transport: walk to the stop, wait for boarding at the stop, ride with short halts at intermediate stops and walk again. The speed slider sets the speed of the vehicle itself, and walking parts go at walking pace. The editor shows the number of stops.

If walking is faster than riding, the route honestly goes on foot. Public transport has no traffic: the routing service does not provide it for transit.

“Hybrid”: its own transport on each leg

The “Hybrid” tile is the last in the row of modes. Turn it on, and in the “Route points” list a row with the mode of the leg appears between neighboring points, for example “↓ 🚗 Car ▾”. Tap it and pick a mode from the list: that is how you build a trip like “on foot to the car park — by car to work — on foot to the entrance”. Each leg is built along its own roads and travels at its own speed — the one set for that mode, so there is no shared speed slider in hybrid. If the next leg is slower, the point slows down to its speed in advance.

New legs get the mode that was selected before hybrid; choosing a regular mode turns hybrid off. In hybrid, the options are those that fit at least one of the legs. The route “Hybrid” has nothing to do with the map's “Hybrid” layer: that one is about satellite imagery with labels.

Speeds up to 200 km/h and the “physics” of a mode

The speed slider goes up to 200 km/h for every mode, but acceleration, braking and turns remain properties of the mode: a pedestrian set to 200 km/h speeds up slowly and slows down hard on turns, and a car at the same 200 km/h still brakes before a speed limit sign and in traffic if those options are on. The speed is remembered for each mode separately.
